China’s Yunfeng hires general counsel

Shaolin Luo has joined the firm - set up by tech giant Alibaba founder Jack Ma - from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in Beijing.

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett partner in Beijing, Shaolin Luo, has joined Chinese private equity firm Yunfeng Capital as general counsel.

Yunfeng was a client of Luo’s at Simpson Thacher. At the law firm he worked primarily on corporate deals including advising China National Chemical Corporation, the state-owned agrochemicals entity on its $43 bullion acquisition of Swiss agribusiness firm Syngenta in 2016.

Luo spent 12 years at Simpson Thacher, of which the last 10 years he served as a partner. He previously worked at Fangda Partners.

YunFeng, which manages more than $10 billion in assets, was co-founded by Jack Ma, the founder and former chief executive of Chinese technology giant Alibaba.

According to its website Yunfeng is invested in four “unicorn” portfolio companies valued at more than $100 billion.
